Important Notice on Filing Your Application:

To apply by mail and qualify for an exemption, the application must be filed by March 1. APPLICATIONS POST-MARKED MARCH 1, WILL BE CONSIDERED TIMELY FILED. If you were prevented from timely filing due to extenuating circumstances, you must apply in person at one of our offices and file a petition with the Value Adjustment Board.

Be advised that Section 196.011(1)(a), Florida Statutes, states, "Failure to make application when required, on or before March 1 of any year, shall constitute a waiver of the exemption privilege for that year, except as provided in subsection (7) or subsection (8)." Subsections (7) and (8) provide that applicants filing after March 1 must file a petition with the Value Adjustment Board. Such petition may be filed at any time during the taxable year on or before the 25th day following mailing of the Notice of Proposed Property Taxes (Trim Notice) by the Property Appraiser, as provided in s. 194.011(1).

PLEASE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION
WHEN FILING FOR ANY PERSONAL EXEMPTION BY MAIL:

  • Year for which you are applying. "Tax Year" at top of application.
  • Type of exemption you are applying for. See box at upper right of application.
    If you are applying for homestead exemption and own vacant property adjoining the parcel you reside on, you may wish to combine them for tax roll purposes, so save our homes protection extends to the additional lot(s).
  • A valid Florida Driver's License if you drive. (A "valid in Florida only" license is not acceptable.) Please include a photocopy of your driver's license (front and back) for each applicant. If you do not hold a valid driver's license issued by any other state or jurisdiction, applicants may provide a Florida I.D. Card issued by the Florida Division of Motor Vehicles. Also, provide affidavit stating you hold no license issued by any other state or jurisdiction. This affidavit must be notarized. *(Click here for Driver's Affidavit form.) ***All identification should reflect your residence address as the Charlotte County property address to complete any application.
  • Charlotte County voter registration, please include photocopy of your Charlotte County voter registration card for each applicant or declaration of domicile if you do not wish to register to vote. (If you have a recorded Declaration of Domicile, please include a photocopy. If you do not already have a Declaration of Domicile, one should be completed and recorded with the Charlotte County Clerk of Courts.) ***All identification should reflect your residence address as the Charlotte County property address to complete any application.
  • Florida vehicle license plate number(s)for all vehicle(s).
  • Social Security number for all applicants and spouse(s), if any.
  • Date(s) of birth for all applicants.
  • Copy of Deed or Tax Bill.

The homestead assessment differential, "Save Our Homes" benefit, is now "portable". You may be able to transfer some or all of the "Save Our Homes" benefit from your prior homestead to your new home, in an amount up to $500,000. If your new home is located in Charlotte County you must complete form DR501T (Transfer of Homestead Assessment Difference) and submit it to this office by March 1 of the application year.

To obtain a signed copy of your original application(s), please include a stamped self-addressed envelope. A copy of your application(s), signed by a representative of this office, is proof that your application(s) were received.

**We recommend the application(s) be sent by certified mail to ensure delivery. **

If you are not a U.S. Citizen, you will need to provide a copy of your recorded Declaration of Domicile and Resident Alien Card (Front and Back), or apply in person.

If you do not reside in Charlotte County, you should contact the County Property Appraiser where you permanently reside.
